Abby's Success Story

Abby's story began in a cold kill shelter in Mobile Alabama. Abby's previous owner's had turned her into the shelter and the only information they gave the shelter workers was that her name was Dominique and that they were no longer feeding her.

A Dalmatian rescuer in Alabama was called and came to see Domi. She found a temporary foster home for her through an all breed rescue. Domi was found to be infested with whipworms and hookworms and heartworm positive. It also looked like she had a litter of pups lately. Rockyspot Dalmatian Rescue in central Oklahoma offered to treat her for her heartworm treatment as it was much cheaper than in Alabama. That meant transport needed to be set up from Mobile to OKC. In the meantime, Domi had a seizure. She had another during transport to Okla. Domi arrived at her temp foster home in OKC and she didn't even know her name! More evidence to the abuse and neglect this poor girl had suffered. She underwent her treatment and had a seizure the day after she was treated. She then returned to her foster home where she had to be crated for 6 weeks and she had several more seizures.

Domi's true Dal personality began to come out as she began to feel better. Although she had very little human contact, she loved and adored people. In the meantime, the all breed rescue in Alabama was having hard times and had no foster homes available for Domi. Dalmatians are hard enough to place, but with her seizures, she may be unadoptable. Pleas were put out on the internet for a foster or permanent home for Domi. Dennis Smith, a Dalmatian angel was contacted, who in turn contacted Marion. Marion put out a plea to this list ( Epil-K9 ) and Deana Flak, who has Zak the beagle responded.

The more she heard about Domi, the more she thought she would want to adopt her. In the meantime, Domi's 6 weeks were over and she began intensive training in how to be a house dog, as she had no clue of what was expected of her. Deana wanted to change her name to Abby, which she now responds to. She is now going on walks and playing with her foster brothers waiting till next week when she will go to her new home with Deana and Zachary.

Abby hd a big set back when Deana went to pick her up. She had started vomiting and nothing seemed to stop it. On the way home Deana stopped in Dallas to see a friend and hopefully go to a vet as Abby was failing fast. To cut a long story short Abby had a huge obstruction composed of several different materials. Surgery was performed and now Abby is home with her new Mum and her new brother Zachary the Beagle. This photo below was taken on her first night home already making herself at home on Deana 's bed!!

Abby is now a healthy and happy young lady she loves her new brother Zach in fact Deana said she adores him.

Update March 2003

I wanted to update you on ME! I am now up to 52 pounds and looking good. I have adjusted to living in my new forever home...sigh...forever home...and like my brother Zachary. He and I will play and play and play. And, we have squirrels in the backyard to watch and I have not fallen in the pool any more...that water was cold, let me tell you!  I now sleep with everyone else in the bed...and...ready for this? I have my very own nice and soft yellow blankie! Yeah, my mom bought it just for ME...can you believe that? OH...and I got a special A for my collar for Valentines Day from my dad...it has diamonds on it! Okay, so they are only fakes, but still, it sure is fancy! I get to eat three times a day and can have some snacks, too. I love to eat frozen carrots...Zachary does not like them, so I eat his, too. That mean old seizure creature is still getting me, but my mom is working on it. I am now on medicine for my thyroid and still taking the phennybarbie (however you spell it!). I have this nice vet named Dr. Wulf, but he does not look like a wolf at all! I like to ride in the Jeep with my mom and Zachary. OH OH! and we walk to the park where I get to play with some hooman kids! I like kids and they all love me! In fact, my mom said that we might see about me becoming a therapy dog and then we could go to the hospital and I could visit sick kids and maybe help them feel better if even just for a little while. I got to go to the beach and it was just ever so much fun fun fun! I got to run and run and run! Zachary showed the beach cows...can you believe? Cows on the beach! Anyway, here is a picture of me and Zachary. I just wanted to let you know how I am doing and to tell you thank you for helping me. I love my Forever Home and my mom and dad just LOVE ME! I mean...how could they not? Aren't I beautiful?
Spotty Kisses,
Lilly Abigail "Abby" Flak previously known as Dominique
